Every child deserves to live in an India free of poverty and filled with love. We believe our education system is the fastest, most effective path to this India. At Teach For India, we are building a movement of leaders working together at all levels of the system to provide an excellent education to all of India’s children.
Teach For India was founded in 2008. We worked with McKinsey & Company to craft a unique blueprint rooted in the belief that all children in India must attain an excellent education, which became the building blocks of the Teach For India movement.
2009 - 2012
DREAM. LAUNCH. JUMP IN.
  • 2009: Our Mumbai and Pune sites launch.
  • 2011: Our Delhi site launches, and we welcome our first cohort of Fellows to the Alumni movement.
  • 2012: Our Chennai and Hyderabad sites launch, the InspirED Conference sparks dialogue in education
In 4 years, we went from 87 Fellows to 700, our Staff grew from 8 members to a team of 150, and we became one of the largest non-profit recruiters in India.
  • 2013: Our Broadway-inspired Maya Musical sets a new bar.
  • 2014: Redrawing India, the first book about us, is published - marking 5 years of TFI.
  • 2014: Our Ahmedabad site launches.
  • 2015: Our Bengaluru site launches..
  • 2016: InnovatEd launches to support early-stage Alumni education entrepreneurs.
  • 2016: Firki, our teacher education platform, launches.
We started to define what really matters most to us. We questioned what it would take for us to actually transform the education landscape in India. Teach For India turned 5, our first batch of students graduated from school, and the picture of an India free of poverty and filled with love started to take shape.
2013 - 2016
LEARNING. LOVE. IMPACT.
2017 - 2022
PARTNERSHIP. ADVOCACY. REINVENTION.
  • 2017: TFIx launches to support education entrepreneurs across India.
  • 2018: The Kids Education Revolution launches to reimagine education in partnership with children.
  • 2019: Grey Sunshine, the second book about us, is published.
  • 2019: The Greatest Show on Earth - a musical on the status of India's education is staged.
  • 2020: Community support through Covid including ration and device distributions.
  • 2021 - Our Kolkata site launches.
  • 2021 - Our campaign to re-open schools picks up momentum, and our Students return to schools.
This was the phase of challenge, hope, reinvention, and of the power of community. Teach For India turned 10, and we began to see the ripple effects of our Alumni movement. The pandemic and school shutdown compelled us to innovate, and we began to reimagine and redefine what learning can look like.
  • 2022 - The India & Studies launch to bring our Constitutional Values to life in our classrooms.
  • 2023 - Our Hamilton-inspired Conference of the Birds musical explores the idea of India.
  • 2023 - Our Alumni movement crosses the 5000 mark.
  • 2024 - Our bold Lead with Love Recruitment campaign launches, and we have over 50 Student Alumni in the Fellowship.
  • 2024 - Teach For India turns 15.
As we entered Phase 4, we thought about our bold vision and North Star, what it would take to get us there, and the ways in which our collective was starting to shift the needle.
This is our decade of possibility.
2022 onwards:
COLLECTIVE. CHANGE. INDIA.
While our Fellowship program is built to recruit a pipeline of extraordinary talent, and foster commitment to the shared purpose of transforming education; our Alumni movement is designed to nurture a network of leaders who serve at every level of the system, not only in visible positions of influence, but also in roles where they quietly plant the seeds of change.
We believe that meaningful change requires a parallel effort - one in which individuals across local ecosystems come together to build a shared purpose, strengthen their commitment and capabilities, and foster deeper connections that enable effective, collaborative action.

Beyond the Fellowship, our Alumni continue to further the cause of educational equity as leaders in our prioritised pathways:
Policy and Governance:
They work on policy and governance issues, supporting governments directly on large-scale systemic reforms in education.
An Equitable,
Excellent
Education
Transformational Schools:
They choose to be teachers, teacher trainers and leaders in schools or community centres.
Enablers of Transformational Schools:
They support schools through curriculum, assessment reform, large-scale teacher training, and ed tech.
Policy and Governance:
They work on policy and governance issues, supporting governments directly on large-scale systemic reforms in education.
Together, our Alumni model builds collective leadership, sparks innovation, and creates the conditions for systemic impact that unfolds over time.
