Teach For All
Teach For All is a global network of independent social enterprises that are working to expand educational opportunity in their nations by enlisting their most promising future leaders in the effort. These organizations recruit and develop their countries’ top recent university graduates of all academic concentrations and career interests to commit two years to teach in low-income communities and become lifelong leaders for educational excellence and equity. Teach For All aspires to the vision that one day all children will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
In the past five years, social entrepreneurs from more than twelve countries sought support from Teach For America or Teach First, an adaptation of Teach For America in the United Kingdom, to create similar organizations that would address educational inequity in their respective countries. In response to these requests, Teach For All was launched at the Clinton Global Initiative in September of 2007 as a separately incorporated, funded, and staffed organization that is being incubated within Teach For America. Founding global partners currently include the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the Amy & Larry Robbins Foundation and HSBC.
What does Teach For All do?
Teach For All seeks to accelerate the impact of member organizations by developing core competencies in the following areas:
- Sharing programmatic best practices: Teach For All helps local entities establish the highest quality programs for recruiting, selecting, training, developing, and fostering the leadership of program participants. Over time, we will capture local innovations to spread throughout the Teach For All network.
- Building private and public sector support: Teach For All assists local entities in building the necessary governmental and private sector support through leveraging records of past performance and existing relationships, including facilitating funding relationships with international partners.
- Anticipating organizational development needs: Teach For All helps local entities quickly put in place the organizational structure and systems necessary to foster success.
- Fostering a global network: Teach For All is building an unprecedented international network among social enterprises, participants, and alumni who learn from each other and work together in pursuit of educational excellence for all children.
Michael & Susan Dell Foundation
Michael and Susan Dell established the foundation in 1999. The gift was inspired by their passion for supporting children’s causes as a way to make an even greater difference in a measurable way, particularly for those children living in urban poverty. Based in Austin, TX, the foundation initially focused on improving education and children’s health in Central Texas; but their mission soon expanded to reach children globally. To date, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has committed more than $530 million to assist non-profit organizations working in major urban communities in the United States and India. Their vision is to focus on opportunities with the greatest potential to directly and measurably transform the lives of children living in urban poverty.
The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation was the founding funder of Teach For India, providing the opportunity and support for Teach For India to begin the movement to eliminate educational inequity in the country.
“The Indian adaptation of the proven Teach For America model concept of selecting the best graduates from leading Indian colleges, and training and mentoring them as they spend two years in government and poor private schools – where they impart fresh ideas and energy within schools, help children substantially and measurably improve their learning levels, and themselves become capable leaders“ appeals to us. The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation supports it fully, and has already made a substantial two year grant to ensure its success in India.”
