Leader, Firki (Teacher Training Portal)

Project Summary :

Teach For India’s mission is to create a movement of leaders who will eliminate educational inequity in India. Our vision is a day when all children across India, irrespective of background, attain an excellent education.

Teachers in India today are in urgent need of support and training. Despite all teachers being mandated to get 18 days of training per year, many in government schools do not receive any form of training. The situation is worse in low-cost private schools. To address this situation, Teach For India launched Firki , an open-source, free, online teacher-training portal. Firki leverages the power of technology to enable teachers around the country to access high quality teacher education on demand. Firki brings together master teachers and pedagogy experts from India and globally to deliver content on the why and how of teaching.

Teach for India is looking to hire an entrepreneurial, mission-driven professional with deep interest in education and teacher development, to lead Firki.

Team Overview :

The Firki project is a part of Teach for India and works under the Training and Impact vertical. The Firki Leader is expected to work across all verticals, including Technology, Communications and Alumni Impact, to ensure fidelity across all channels.

Roles and Responsibilities :

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Strategic Planning and Compliance:
  • Create and implement short-term and long-term strategy for the project.
  • Manage the design, execution and continuous improvement of implementations in all 7 Teach for India regions, as well as partnerships in other geographies.
  • Provide timely reports to Firki funders and Teach for India’s senior leadership with project updates.
  • Maintain project budget.
  • Support the development team with fundraising and grant applications in support of Firki.
Content and Product Development:
  • Define problem, understand users, analyze different solutions using a data-driven approach and inspire new ideas.
  • Drive architecture and design of the online platform to create positive user experience.
  • Ensure production support and maintenance of the platform, to meet the needs of the users. Collaborate with Teach for India’s technology team.
  • Design content in partnership with Teach for India internal experts, Training and Impact team and external partners.

Implementation & Partnerships:
  • Drive product promotion, outreach and marketing efforts to reach teachers in low-income schools across the country.
  • Build key long-term partnerships with different stakeholders such as government, networks of schools, teacher training institutions, other non profit organizations as well as funders.
  • Design and execute the vision for holistic evaluation of impact on teachers, school leaders, students and delivery partners.

  • Attract, hire and lead a team of high quality and high performing individuals across all three Firki verticals - content design, implementation and technology.
  • Inspire and motivate the team to create world class teacher education content and support on-ground impact.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills in English, and a regional language [Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada]
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Excellent project management and organization skills, PMP certification is a plus
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • 5-8 years of relevant work experience, preferably leading product design, development and launch
  • Experience in the education sector required, teacher and/or teacher trainer experience preferred
