I want to know about Teach For India and the Fellowship program.
Please read through our Fellowship FAQs. You will find all the information you need on the movement and the specifics of the Fellowship program.
What are the admission criteria?
The eligibility criteria to the Teach For India Fellowship program are as follows:
- Minimum qualification - You must have completed all coursework required for your undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s degree equivalent) from an accredited college or university by the last week of May 2013.
- Academic record - Your degree transcripts (graduate/postgraduate certificates) will be reviewed before an admission decision can be made. Applicants must also pass any coursework indicated in their transcripts at the time of the interview.
- Nationality - You must be 1) an Indian citizen or 2) a foreign national of Indian origin. Foreign citizens who are not of Indian origin are not eligible to apply.
- Commitment & location - You should be willing to make a full-time commitment to teaching and living in one of our placement cities (Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad) starting June 2013. Fellows of the program will be full-time staff members of the schools, in which they are placed, and will work stipulated school hours, six days a week.
- English fluency - You must be fluent in English, as Teach For India Fellows will be placed in English-medium schools and will be expected to conduct their classes entirely in English.
- Age Limit - Since the Teach For India Fellowship aims at building future leaders who will have impact for a sustained period of time, applicants will have to be born after 1st January 1978.
I have already registered on your website. However, I have not received an email yet.
We are sure our system is completely compatible with email services such as Gmail and Yahoo. However, there are certain email services such as Hotmail that have a highly restrictive email filter which could be the cause of the undelivered email. We suggest that you register using a Gmail or Yahoo account. Also, please check your Spam/Junk folder to ensure that the email has not been delivered there.
How can I save the application form ?
The online application is designed for you to complete various sections at your own pace before you submit the final version. Please ensure that you click on the “Save and Proceed” button at the bottom of every section before moving on to another section
The Admissions team will only review your application once you submit it. They will NOT look at your application while it is still in progress.
On the Application form, how do I enter my GPA/percentage/cumulative average?
Please check whichever measure is most relevant to you, and then fill in both your score and the base from which it was calculated. Please give only one measure. For example, if your institution uses “Cumulative Average” as its measure for academic achievement and your cumulative average is 8.0/10.0, please check “Cumulative Average”, and then fill in “8.0” on Score and “10.0” on Base. If your institution does not calculate any of these measures for you, you will have to calculate the average of the final grades of ALL of your coursework, and fill in the relevant information. Please note that if you attend an Assessment Centre, we will ask for copies of your mark sheets or transcripts to confirm the score you indicated.
Why are the Essays important?
Essays are your chance to tell Teach For India about yourself in your own words. Please spend some time thinking about how you will answer your questions, and learn about Teach For India—by talking to staff members, reading our website, watching our videos and reading media articles—before answering the essay questions.
Please ensure that you have checked your essays for spelling and grammar, and answered each question fully. We recommend that you show your essays to someone who can help you proofread to make sure that you submit a polished copy.
When will I hear back?
You will first hear back from us within 2 weeks of the deadline that you applied for. For example, if you apply before the first deadline of 31st July 2011, then you will hear back from us by mid-August on the result of your application. Based on the result, you could move on to the Phone Interview or Assessment Centre stage. The entire process will take 6 weeks from the deadline to complete.
What is Teach For India’s selection process?
We will choose Fellows based on a multi-stage admissions process. The selection for the 2013 Fellowship will include the following stages:
- Review of online application
- Phone interview (not applicable for all candidates; certain candidates may be invited to the Assessment Centre stage directly after their online application is reviewed)
- Assessment Centre, which is a full day session where the applicants go through a group discussion, a sample teaching session, a written critical thinking test and a personal interview.
- Additionally, once selected, we will ask you to submit references of people that you have worked with professionally or your professors who will be able to vouch for your performance and suitability for the role.
Foreign Nationals (of Indian origin) – For more information on the OCI card, please go to
Ministry of Home Affairs. To apply for the OCI card, please go to the Online OCI Registration Form. We recommend applying for the OCI card as soon as you have made the decision to join the Fellowship, as it takes approximately 1-3 months to receive the card.
